In 1959, a young man named Norbert Olberz plunked down $4,000 and purchased a little sporting goods store in a town called La Canada, just north of Los Angeles, CA. He built the store around the foundation that people wanted top quality equipment and a friendly, knowledgeable staff to help them with purchases. During the past four decades, Norbert's vision has flourished. To date, there are 28 Sport Chalet stores throughout the Southern California and Nevada areas. However, these days Sport Chalet is utilizing a variety of logistics cost-management services in order to optimize store performance. Recently, Sport Chalet selected enVista to streamline material flow across the supply chain. As part of the process, enVista is re-designing Sport Chalet's 325,000-square foot distribution facility in Ontario, California, and making recommendations for material handling equipment and process improvements. This will help Sport Chalet see increased efficiencies throughout its operation. enVista is also developing an internal, inbound freight strategy to improve visibility and optimization of incoming merchandise. A more structured plan will enable Sport Chalet to reduce inbound transportation costs. The retailer anticipates reductions in transportation cost, lead-time and inventory turns. In addition, this initiative will enable Sport Chalet to become more effective and efficient with material movement, leading to improvements in the way merchandise is moved to stores, so that it is "store ready" when it arrives. "We've grown substantially over the past few years and in order to continue to provide our customers with the level of service they are accustomed to, we needed to improve our supply chain-starting from the ground up," said Craig Levra, CEO of Sport Chalet. "This started with moving into a new larger distribution center last year and we have now teamed with enVista to help us continue to develop new operational processes across the supply chain that will meet our current needs and take us into the future."
