Find a Penny.

When you spot a penny on the ground do you pass it by or pick it up? I have a compulsion for picking up pennies when I see them. It is not because I think I can buy a lot with a penny in the 21st Century. For me it is a mindset, a disciplined attitude about saving money. When the opportunity presents itself, my natural instinct is to pocket a penny because I am keenly aware that pennies make dollars, dollars make hundreds, and hundreds make thousands of dollars.

This same mindset is required when evaluating Performance Labor Management Systems and programs. It is the cumulative pennies that are saved over time from such programs that create significant value. Consequently, I am amazed that in today's economic times executives are willing to walk by pennies on a daily basis that add up to millions of dollars in savings for their organizations. Is it a lack of focus on their part? Is it because executives are looking for the quick win, the silver bullet? Or is it because they just don't understand that value of Performance Management Programs?

Distribution centers can change rapidly - even day to day - so it is no surprise that business processes cannot remain static. The workplaces that are open to new ideas and seek out strategic business process transformation are the ones that will reach the top of their game. Easier said than done? Not with proper planning techniques. Follow the guidelines here for a smooth transition project.

Many industrial engineers will agree that working on a productivity improvement project, such as introducing a labor management solution, can be very complicated in its initial stages. In fact, the careful planning of a project introduction is a mission-critical piece of the initiative. When kicking off a project such as engineered labor standards, several industrial engineers and distribution executives believe that the most important aspect of this type of project is “selling” the project to floor managers and associates.

This is absolutely correct. To drive personnel (managers and associates included) to feel ownership of a labor standards project is paramount.

On September 9, a group of supply chain professionals met in Southern California for a half-day workshop. The interactive learning session, sponsored by enVista, Manhattan Associates and Nature's Best, focused on how to identify and address supply chain cost management opportunities to transform business processes and achieve results.

The group also toured Nature's Best's state-of-the-art distribution center in Chino, California. Nature's Best, a leader in the distribution of natural, organic and health-related food and vitamins, recently achieved significant operational efficiencies through an aggressive facility redesign that included WMS and slotting system implementations, trainings and go-lives.
